Feliz mes de la herencia hispana/ Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

… a todos los latinos! A los que hablan español, and those who speak English OR those who speak both, and sometimes SPANGLISH como yo.

Latinos come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and textures… it’s what makes our cultura so beautiful and unique.

Felicidades a todos los países que celebran su independencia. Yo celebro la mía, porque aunque no nací en México, tengo el nopal bien presente y mis padres siempre me inculcaron ese orgullo. ¡Viva Mexico!

I thank my parents y mis abuelitos for raising me with not one but two beautiful cultures.

I am not Mexican and I am not American. I am Mexican-American… and no, I am not more Mexican neither am I more gringa o pocha o como me llamen.

Tengo dos culturas. I hold both close to my heart.

Because sometimes I feel like supporting the US national teams pero cuando hablamos de fútbol siempre le voy a México y obviamente a las Chivas.

When it comes to music, I can sing you a corrido just like I can sing you some Lil Wayne or Drake and even 2pac.

I love dancing. I have Latina rhythm when it comes to Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, two-stepping, and even twerking… ok, I’m lying, I don’t twerk. Wish I could!

What I love about being raised the way that I was, is that I have this ability to belong to not ONE but TWO groups, two communities, two culturas. I can work in Spanish-language newsrooms and read, write, and converse fluently… just as I can do it in English.

I can teach someone to tweet o tuitear. Y también enseñarles lo que es un hashtag y tendencias en la web.

This month may not be celebrated in the U.S. as it is in El Salvador o Guatemala o cualquier otro país que celebra su independencia. But this month should be taken as a reminder to us all, that although we are categorized as Latinos o Hispanos, we are all different, and this is something we should ONLY embrace.

¡Si se puede!
